For those who do not know me, let me introduce myself, my name is Jessica Gilliland. I am and always have been an artist in all I do. I am a Christian, homeschooling mother of seven, grandmother to five. From a young age my parents recognized my interest, abilities and creative nature and began to cultivate my artistic abilities and curiosity at seven years old. I have studied under many amazing artists to whom I owe a debt of gratitude, and now look to provide the same inspiration and guidance to others. I have worked as a muralist, had shows of my work locally, and have been invited to do larger shows which I have always turned down due to my “family first” policy and the time constraints of having a large family. I have done live paintings in conjunction with speakers. I have sold both commissioned work as well as prints. My art has been used and displayed in churches and businesses, as well as for weddings, showers, invitations, fundraisers and so much more. For the last 12 years I have continued my career in art via photography. One of my first years in business I was awarded the honor of “Favorite Photographer” in Hollister by Out and About Magazine. I have made a living as an artist for most of my adult life. I originally learned watercolor, but have also studied acrylics, pastels, sketching etc. I have explored almost all mediums.
In offering our classes we have a very simple objective: to inspire a future generation of artists and pay it forward for the artists who poured into me. We will not be looking for cookie cutter art. Each child’s style and interests will be encouraged and hopefully developed through our studies.
A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.
― Salvador Dali
Every artist was first an amateur.
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.
― Henry David Thoreau
As I work at my drawings, day after day, what seemed unattainable before is now gradually becoming possible. Slowly, I'm learning to observe and measure. I don't stand quite so helpless before nature any longer.
― Vincent van Gogh
Art is defined as the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. It is simply my hope to encourage your child’s artistic abilities, imagination and cultivate and environment to see all the beauty God has created around them.
As homeschoolers we teach through the subjects; mathematics is bound by right and wrong answers; science is bound by right and wrong answers. Art, however, is subjective there are no right or wrong answers in art.
